Propolis is the Beehive's Immune System
Propolis has been used for centuries by many cultures for its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and detoxifying properties. Propolis is a sticky substance that bees make from tree and other plant resins.
Apiter markets propolis extracts in powder and fluid presentations, at different concentrations*:
PEP-90®
PEP-95®
PEP-80®

Apiter Laboratories is a regional company, founded in 1978 with the goal of developing products for healthcare and wellness, leveraged with a natural resource with proven therapeutic qualities: Propolis.
Around 1930, a descendant of Swiss and German immigrants, Alfonso Roth started venturing into beekeeping, adding this activity to others like poultry farming, rabbit breeding and wine growing that he was developing on his family farm on Nueva Helvecia (Colonia Suiza), Uruguay.
Years later, working along his two sons they focused exclusively on beekeeping, making the farms production adequate for export and adding value by implementing a homogenization process.
In the 70s natural Propolis began to be collected, as it gained commercial value for the first time in Uruguay from being exported to some markets on the European Economic Community.
At the same time, research and development began into technologies for obtaining propolis extract. As a consequence of the extract production Apiter Laboratories is founded in 1978 in Uruguay and in 1984 Quemidur, its subsidiary in Argentina.
From its beginnings Apiter Laboratories has been dedicated to research and development of technology related to farming, processing and formulation of Propolis to achieve traceability and stability of its active ingredients.
Since then, Apiter Laboratories has developed Propolis based products for the improvement of human and animal health, rising to be the regional leader in this sectors; continuously furthering research and obtaining a Propolis extract of unprecedented pharmaceutical quality in the world; setting new challenges to innovate and constantly advance on its contribution to society’s health and wellness.
Seeing the value of this product for its health benefits, Apiter Laboratories pioneered awareness of Propolis collection for beekeepers of the region who used to discard it as a subproduct during cleaning and maintenance of beehives. Apiter also implemented natural Propolis farming with specially designed meshes for bees to deposit the majority of their Propolis production, obtaining a fresh, less contaminated product with higher polyphenols concentration.
Beyond technological advances, this initiative goes further than the company, improving productivity and quality of all beehive products.
Since 1982, Apiter has been exporting propolis extracts to different parts of the world such as Germany, Italy, France, Spain, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Korea, Israel, Croatia, Slovenia and The Netherlands.
As from 2004, APITER has implemented a Quality Management System in line with Norm ISO 9001, applicable to the design, development, production and marketing of propolis extracts. The implementation of this norm, aimed at permanently consolidating the improvement of the system, allows for the traceability of the extract's origin and provides an accurate database of the producers who, after a careful evaluation, are qualified to participate in the Quality Management System.
Propolis is a natural product collected and processed by bees, obtained from the bark and buds of trees. Viscous in consistency with variability of shades ranging from greenish, brown, reddish and even black, depending on its botanical origin.
Bees use propolis to varnish the inside of the hives, in order to create an aseptic environment, close cracks, reduce access routes and consolidate the structural components of the hive.
The chemical composition is complex, we can basically mention that it is composed of 50-55% resins and balsams, 30-40% wax, 5-10% essential oils, 5% pollen and 5% various materials (organic and mineral).
After 35 years of research and technical development and of the implementation of traceability methods, Apiter has optimized the production process and succeeded in obtaining standardized propolis extracts, thereby assuring the stability of the active ingredients and the reduction and/or elimination of contaminants.
The Uruguayan Savannah propolis originates in a privileged geographical region, with typical species such as: Eucalyptus globulus, Populus sp. and Betula sp., among others. This results in a propolis extract with top quality active ingredients.
Apiter Propolis Extract contains a high percentage of poliphenols and flavonoids in a balanced formulation, so as to optimize health benefits. It contains 120 to 250 mg/g pure propolis flavonoid levels, expressed as galangin. Minimum content of polyphenols is 14%.
Propolis is harvested by selected apiarists who form part of the Quality Management System, thus assuring a continuous improvement in the sanitary management of the beehives. APIMESH® Harvesting. As from 1991, Apiter implemented a novel propolis harvesting method, consisting of “meshes” that ensure a fresh product, with a higher content of poliphenols and a lower level of contamination.
